The Fairtrade Hadrian's Wall Campaign
Hadrian's Wall is the first World Heritage Site, National Trail and international zone to achieve Fairtrade status. Congratulations to all who made this possible!
The Fairtrade Hadrian's Wall project was initiated by Lauren in October 2008 with the aim of linking all of the Fairtrade towns within the Hadrian's Wall corridor into one Fairtrade zone.
The region has a strong tradition of supporting trade justice; Traidcraft and Shared Interest are pioneering commercial organisations based in the north east, while Cumbria has more Fairtrade Towns than any other county.
The campaign was launched by the BBC's George Alagiah in February 2009 and now has the supoport of all 11 local authorities and over 120 businesses in the corridor. Fairtrade zone status was officially declared on 22nd February 2010.
Hadrian's Wall Country is a farming region that produces a wide variety of food and other goods. The project also promotes fair trade for these products and is working with Hadrian's Wall Heritage to promote this project in tandem with their Locally Produced scheme.
